In 1556 Philip II inherited an already prosperous kingdom. This was in Spain's golden age. On April 3 1559 Philip II of Spain and Henry II of France signed the peace of Cateau-Cambresis, ending a long series of wars between the Habsburg and Valois dynasties. There were peasant revolts in the Netherlands, so in 1567 Philip sent an army to stop them. An 80 year long war of independence followed this event. In 1571 the Spanish navy defeated the Turkish navy at the battle of Lepanto. This was huge because before then the Turks had dominated the seas and trade routes to the east. In 1581 after the king of Portugal died without any heirs Philip made a weak claim to the throne and became king of both Spain and Portugal. In 1588 Philip sent the Spanish armada to invade England because Queen Elizabeth refused his proposal and returned England to Protestantism. Unfortunately the armada was met by a huge storm which destroyed much of the fleet, the rest was defeated by the English navy.
